Dr. Katherina M. Sinitsa

Katherine obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science (numerical learner modeling) from Institute of cybernetics, Kiev, Ukraine, in 1997 and M.A. in Computer Science from Kiev State University in 1979.

Working Languages: Russian, Ukrainian, English. Basic German.


Current professional position: Senior Researcher, International Research and Training Center for Information Technologies and Systems UNESCO/IIP (IRTC), Kiev, Ukraine. She stayed with Didactic and Tutoring System Lab, later with Intelligent Tutoring Systems Lab in Institute for cybernetics since graduation. Currently the Lab has joined the IRTC and renamed to CIT Lab with focus on distance education, resources and methodology of their creation and use.

She worked as a Guest Researcher in Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University, Japan, and GMD, Darmstadt, Germany. Participated in a number of projects on CAI-systems, authoring systems for CBL, numerical learner modeling, multilingual support for Internet-based education, national digital resources for education (1980-1999).

Currently is involved in the work on standardization of the architecture, learner records and learner resources descriptions (metadata) in IEEE LTSC.

Fields of Specialization: Distance education and life-long learning, intelligent tutoring systems, learner modeling.

Katherine participated in a number of International projects, recently: STACCIS (TAP,DG XIII, EU), MATEN (INCOCOPERNICUS). Currently she chairs IEEE LTSC Glossary Working Group.

She was a PC member of national and international conferences since 1993, an organizer of a number of national conferences and workshops, and a reviewer for a number of first-grade conferences in learning technologies, namely ITS, AI-ED, ICCE.

Currently she is a member of the editorial board of the international journal "Interactive Learning Environments", a member of the IEEE Computer Society and Standards Association (since 1998). Formerly AACE (country representative) and AIED Society member (1996, 1997)

She has an experience as a lecturer for re-training courses (Informatics and Computer-based educational systems) 1984 -1987, and currently is involved in the preparation of the Master course in information technologies.

Publications about 50 referred articles in Russian and English, a technical co-editor and contributor of "Handbook on computer-based technologies for education" - in Russian, 1992.
