(from early 2000 to present time)
Seconded to newly formed United States Open University as MBA Program
Director and e-learning consultant to the first Vice Chancellor. Overall
responsibility for establishment of a full scale MBA Programme to be presented
online throughout the US. To date, graduate foundation course and open
access route (Management Certificate) are running, with the rest of the
programme to roll out over next 2 years. My responsibility for parterships,
choice of technologies, budgets, leadership, establishment, academic credibility,
assessment, recruitment of Faculty and Associate Faculty are absolute.
Contributing to accreditation processes (establishign new university in
the US). Building teams with both content and teaching process knowledge,
commissioning overall adaptation of multi-media OU courses to a high quality
and establishing governing and quality mechanisms.
In addition, whenever time permit, I
am a keynote speaker and workshop leader at e-learning conferences around
the world (see web site for examples). I continue to research, write and
publish in the area of online learning. I have two new books in preparation
for Kogan Page: E-training & E-tivities.
Also: Visiting Professor, School of Business
and Economics, Queens University, Belfast, where I provide e-learning
consultancy and research development into online learning for managers.
1996-99 OUBS Director of Presentation
(sub-Dean) Responsible for Presentation & Teaching Technology. Directorate
and strategic responsibility for presentation of OUBS courses including
quality assurance, recruitment, development and deployment of 800 Associate
lecturers, management of budgets and staff and contribution to strategic
direction and management of OUBS as part of Deans and Directors Team.
The OUBS is a self financing unit of the OU, with turnover of around £44m
p.a. and run on business lines. Also head of R& D and project unit
exploring ICT for distance management education, establishment and achievement
of strategy and policy for technology and broadcast within the School,
project sponsor and chair of steering groups for major projects including
OUBS Intranet and Extranet. Recruited and established multi-functional
teams, secured funding, implemented projects in area of e-learning.Role
included active research of application of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) to management education, including development of quality
through ICT applications and teaching systems

Research Focus
My personal research has focussed on communication, information technologies
and distance learning, with special reference to computer mediated conferencing
and management education. I have explored the new skills associated with
working online in the 21st Century, and especially on the teaching and
